RiverJordan's News

Guys, holy shit i had so many submissions this year .___. I also went to 3 Newgrounds meetups, made my first 2 flash games, participated in 2 online game jams, as well as 2 local ones.

I'd say it was a sweet year, Happy 2010 guys, 2011 is gonna rock even harder! Then in 2012, were all gonna die! No jk, that's dumb, kinda like HotDiggityDemon. (ooohhh, i went thereeee).

;)

SO; Game Jam. Alongside WallRoss, Father-of-Death, and ZaDrugLord, we teamed up to make a game that very loosely fit the theme "Earth freezing over". We had this idea for an Evil space Overlord who tries to block out the sun and freeze the planet. You had to blow up the ship before the planet froze.

Frozen Fate

Now, despite this game getting the worst score out of all of the game jam games (excluding trader-eddys game because it was broken and about moving squares), all of us on team Arctic Fox are really happy with the game we made. There were a few control issues (sliding) and not being "SPIKES KILL YOU!" enough, but besides that the game has a pretty good story and gameplay isn't the worst ever.

If you want to read more about it, i wrote up a short thing on my blog.

Good 2010 guys, talk to you in the new year!

Hey guys! Recently i made a video using flash, after effects and photoshop called "Play" and it's time for all you crazy crackers on newgrounds to get a taste!

You can watch ~Play~ here!

It was a huge learning experience for me, and I'm totally gonna do Exile in this way too now, that's still a ways off, but it's gonna be SO cool :D

I also had a devblog while making it, you can read the "Making of Play" here.

------------
In other news, inD interviewed Jimp, the creator of Sushi Cat, Penguinz and ZOMGies. You can read it here

Right, so remember that game that i was all "Trailer lols" like a while ago? No? Whatever, it's out now.

So go have fun and write some reviews, i know there's glitches but it's still pretty awesome, and a fantastic learning experience for Xeptic and I. Were gonna hit you guys with some stuff later on next year that'll rock your socks off!

Mother Judgement: Nun with Guns
A Nun with a gun protects her flock with a glock.

Also check out inD, this independent web mag I'm attempting to start.

Mother Judgement is out!

In the last little while, i've noticed that there's a huge, yet vastly divided community of independent media producers. On newgrounds we have artists, animators, programmers and musicians, all making really sexy content. Then you have the iPod and iPad app developers, and the Xbox Live arcade developers, and WiiWare people, and people making short films, and indie bands that are trying to work the myspace's.

Last night i started this community facebook group (and today, a twitter) called inD. I want to try and bring together all of these communities by reporting on, and discussing all of the aspects of the independent media going on's.

--In case it's not clear, my end goal is to have a type of internet magazine like the escapist, that reports on and discusses what's going on in the community, i'm not managing or telling anyone what to do--

Facebook
Twitter
In the coming holiday season, i'll try and focus on making a full escapist-esque website complete with forums, weekly blogs, news, previews, reviews, and the works, which i think would really push the site to be something worth checking out.

I've opened up a blog, for now, it's just Kalen (Jazlyte) and I writing articles for inD, but there will be more to come as the site evolves. Check out our articles on Blogger

Kalen wrote an article on Escapism in flash artists

I wrote an article on Flash as a medium and where it's going

If you're interested in seeing this idea go further, please join the facebook group and invite your friends and help spread the word, thanks.

Now that the goddamn Saw series has come to an end, it's time to take a look at what ACTUALLY just happened.

Before you spam, please read what i have to say.

This was a game made in Unity

You can also make full 3D games in Unity, and it is embeddable in the browser, just like flash. Unity is also better than flash for making 2D games, you have more control over everything, lighting, FX, 3D space, whatever.

Unity can export to Mac, PC, Wii, Xbox, PS3, iPad and iPhone. How many of you flash game developers will learn that and NOT say "Wow, i can make browser games, click an "export" button, and submit it to the iPad app store?

And websites have HTML5. Hopefully flash could get on some kind of Animation train that exports to better video, i could totally see it as a standalone animation program of some kind..?

So yeah..Flash needs to die for a better internet experience for everyone, light hardcore 3D games that run just as well as if you had bought and downloaded TF2 or whatever.

Don't fight it, and Tom you should probably start accepting unity submissions to get this internet revolution a'Rollin.

--EDIT--
Yes, I've seen Flash 3D "MoleHill", and It looks good. My main thoughts though is that Adobe doesn't treat flash as a program that makes games, it's a program for "Web content", where as Unity is designated FOR making games. We'll see though, nothing would make me happier to see Flash live, I love flash!
