Troll Infestation

Posted by RiverJordan - September 3rd, 2013

I went on a journey to the Spirit Science Forum recently... this is how it went down.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems a lot of people just like to start fights and be mean just for the sake of it.... I don't really get it. Can someone please explain it to me?

I'm far more interested in creating new, exciting things, projects, videos, things of meaning and value!! - with people I love and care about, and people who love and care about me.

Maybe that's just me though :P

Either way... what would you do about it?

is this a joke

Yes :P

Such thinking is far too radical, Jordan! But maybe...just maybe if you used more of my music in future Spirit Science episodes... ^_~

Hmmm.. you drive a hard bargain okay deal!

They really didn't seem to be trolling. More of not agreeing with you than trolling.

How does "Jordans balls are stuck in his throat" translate to that?

Debate/comradery often degrades into witticisms and colorful phrases. Moderators/teachers/leaders are often targets for all sorts of stuff. Harsh language is only to keep you humble, and trying to make you understand someone else's view (as well as toughen you up to getting blind-sided, and caught unprepared for rebuttal).

As someone who grew up with undiagnosed Asperger's, I can tell you my experience was hard won.

Fear comes from the unknown, and that's at the core of what you're disseminating. Here's a subject I'd like to see addressed: Do you have a list of questions, you think science might be able to answer? Having access to truly insightful knowledge isn't enough, it's the questions we want answered. Curiosity should triumph over fear of the unknown.

There's some truth

but no explanation

"I'm far more interested in creating new, exciting things, projects, videos, things of meaning and value!! - with people I love and care about, and people who love and care about me."

1.) you say that like everybody automatically has the ability and willpower to be creative 2.) not everyone has people that love and care about them

without 1.) comes boredom and without 2.) insecurities arise, which is a gateway to trolling

besides, it doesn't help when you introduce bizarre theories (not to say they are unfounded) like humans being descendants from Mars or whatever...discussions like that are just open playgrounds for trolls and flippant comments, unfortunately.

Haha, love the softcore buttcheeks shot. In all seriousness its your forum. Regardless if your are being a complacent admin,or ruling over it with an iron fist, how its runs is your call. That being if it was me i wouldnt care if there were a few negatives in the bunch as long as they werent being crude, racist or generally really disrespectful.

The vibe of the forums kinda feels that way most of the time, plus i'm pretty busy most of the time so i don't spend my time on the forums as much as everyone wants me to :P I think that's part of the reason they're upset!

its the internet. what do you expect?

I dunno there's a lot of nice people i've seen on the internet lately!

Well, you should make time for your fans

Well of course the answer to your inquiries is: because being mean is fun!!
Now give me your wallet this is a robbery!
...
i'm joking you are a cool dude, you can have your wallet back...
but only your wallet... i'm taking everything else!

On the other hand is probably that your users just miss you, but don't fear, you can tell them some random guy assaulted you and you were too busy getting back your papers.

I have the same frustration. (I still haven't posted on SS, but I'll be there some day!)
I'm trying my damndest to collaborate. I'm sure there is some place we can come to agree, but some people (relatively few) seem to be contrary for the sake of contrariness. It's like there's really no conversation taking place. Certainly when you're simply trying to one-up each other, you're not interested in the exchange of information.

What I'd like to do is change the tone of conversation. If we could make it a habit to find ground with another person, we could actually start solving problems. Nobody gives a shit about what you can prove if you can't get to work implementing it!
Let's talk about goals and start measuring results. Bring intent into the conversation. That's where the details need hammered out. What are we trying to do? What are we doing to bring that about?

It seems some people who would be learners get what they think they need, then want to be rid of the teacher. I think it's a subconscious attempt to be a master, little do they realize they are not ready yet.

Viva Jordan U skinny dippin you you

Sometimes the process of being mean is a necessity in order to explore one's self.

And what you have to understand is that most "electronic" forms of expression are not always empathetic or meaningful.

Louis CK recently was interviewed by Conan, he expressed that due to Cellphones' lack of physical interactivity, being mean has never been easier because there is no consequence of experiencing immediate reaction.

So the concept of "Troll" - a self-loathing creature who hides itself under a bridge and lashing out at passer-bys is a very appropriate labeling for mean people online.

So it is true that most of the time, these are uninterested in empathy. It's comforting to be mean.

So like "Pearls before swine" expression, you don't have to even talk to them.

A reply is often what they are seeking, only as an excuse to shot you down again.

Course then again, the lacking of physical interactivity online might itself be a good thing as you have the choice to read or not read what is presented to you.

So your response was very appropriate, you reached out to someone who could've used a hug, and they refused.

There is not much else you could've done.

All people can really do is live by their actions alone.

As the words of Charlie Chaplin once said "You don't hate, only the unloved hate."

However, some people have become immune to such interactions.

There is a dark side to everything.

An equal and opposite.

Though the extent of which is limitless.

"For as the extent of human kindness, so is the extent of human cruelty, limited only by the human imagination."

Though all actions could technically be subjective and circumstantial.

Scientifically, even what is considered "evil" is merely a product of humans acting naturally when in a particular situation.

Such is how society develops and the confusion and controversy begins.

For concepts of 'good' and 'evil' are man made and delusional.

At our core, we behave with a variety of instincts that are vastly different given the situations.

Madness and an inability to cope to situations, "Survival" is what plays the key role in actions most foul.
